Daniel Amarelo will address the relationship between language and society in contemporary Galicia in this seminar.
This seminar explores the relationships between language, gender, and sexuality in contemporary Galicia from the perspective of critical sociolinguistics, based on ethnographic fieldwork.
First, it will provide theoretical insights into so-called Queer Linguistics (QL), focusing on its applicability in minoritized language contexts. Second, we will examine methodological aspects of qualitative and applied sociolinguistic research, where the body and emotions connect researchers and participants, blurring and redefining epistemic boundaries. Finally, we will analyze field data and discuss how the paradigm of queer theories is not only useful but also necessary to understand the functioning of linguistic ideologies in the current Galician context, where new research approaches are being explored.
