João Veloso's seminar
April 3, 2025
Carvalho Calero Room (Faculty of Philology)

The seminar, organized by ILLA, is titled "A paisagem linguística única de Macau"

On Thursday, April 3, in the Carvalho Calero Room, Professor João Veloso will give the seminar "A paisagem linguística única de Macau", in which he will introduce us to the linguistic reality of this territory.

Macau is a small territory that, within the People's Republic of China, enjoys a distinct legal-political status and unique historical, linguistic, and cultural characteristics. The region has Chinese and Portuguese as its official languages and English as an important vehicular language.

In addition to this characterization based on the official status of Chinese and Portuguese, Macau is also home to speakers from various provinces of China and several Asian countries. These communities make Macau's multilingualism a unique case in the construction of a singular linguistic landscape, where Portuguese, Chinese (through Cantonese, Mandarin, and other Sinitic languages), English, Filipino (and other languages from the Philippines), Vietnamese, Thai, and Nepali, among others, form an example of multilingual and multicultural coexistence.
