The writer and Associate Professor at the Institute of Letters, Rio de Janeiro State University, will give a lecture entitled ‘A (brief) introduction to Black Brazilian poetics’.
How, in the present day, would it be possible to present an introduction to Brazilian literature, when the very parameters that have enabled the construction of conventional narratives around the idea of literature – or the associated ideas of canon or nation, for example – have been increasingly called into question? Assuming that any discourse with such a claim would inevitably fail, what is proposed here is an exposition that acknowledges these gaps: from a perspective that is consciously non-universalising – that is to say: the perspective of a Black Brazilian researcher and writer – the aim is to highlight some of the many questions surrounding the established notions of ‘Brazil’ and ‘Brazilian Literature’; whilst, at the same time, presenting a selection of writers, the majority of whom are Black, who have produced significant literary works on the contemporary scene.
