As Irmandades da Fala, cen anos despois is the result of an initiative organised by ILLA to highlight the continuing relevance and influence of the project of political self-organisation and literary-artistic distinctiveness undertaken by the Irmandades da Fala (‘Galician Language Brotherhoods’). The collection illustrates how the movement’s founding declaration of the ‘aesthetic sovereignty of the Galician nation’ and its innovative strategies to promote the public presence of Galician remain as current today as they were one hundred years ago. The eighteen essays in the volume range from detailed analyses to more general reflections, spanning many different fields, with each author offering new insight into the all-encompassing project of nation-building envisioned by the Irmandades.
