Ângela Fernandes

Ângela Fernandes (PhD in Literary Studies – Theory of Literature, University of Lisbon, 2009) is an Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon (FLUL). She was a visiting professor in the Department of Comparative Literature at Indiana University – Bloomington (USA) in 2010.
Ângela Fernandes is a researcher at the Centre for Comparative Studies at FLUL, where she coordinates the research group DIIA – Iberian and Ibero-American Dialogues.

Within this context, she has organized several international scientific meetings and co-organized the Exploratory Workshop: Olhar para a Península Ibérica numa Perspectiva Comparativa Europeia. She has published numerous articles in the fields of Spanish Studies, Iberian Studies, and Comparative Studies, and has co-edited volumes and special issues such as Iberian Studies: New Spaces of Inquiry, International Journal of Iberian Studies (Vol. 32, No. 1–2, 2019), and Iberian and Translation Studies: Literary Contact Zones (Liverpool University Press, 2021).

She is the author of two monographs: Os Efeitos da Literatura. Algumas Questões de Arte e de Moral (Lisbon: Edições Colibri, 2004) and A Ideia de Humanidade na Literatura do Início do Século XX. Huxley, Malraux, Gómez de la Serna  (Lisbon: Edições Tinta-da-china, 2013).

Ângela Fernandes served as a member of the FLUL School Council (2017–2023) and as Director of the PhD-COMP – FCT International Doctoral Program in Comparative Studies (a partnership between the University of Lisbon, the University of Bologna, and KU Leuven) and of the PEC – Graduate Program in Comparative Studies (2016–2023). Alongside other administrative roles at FLUL, she was Deputy Director of the Centre for Comparative Studies (2011–2013) and Assistant Dean for Research at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon (2014–2016).
