Lecture by Elisa Serra Porteiro on Irish theatre on the Galician stage
10th October of 2022, 13:00 h
Salón de graos, Facultade de Filoloxía (UDC)

ILLA organises this activity with the presence of the lecturer from University College Cork.

The lecture will analyse some of the keys to the historical relationship between Galicia and Ireland, connecting them with the incorporation of Irish dramatic works into the Galician theatrical system, and will address specific cases of two representative playwrights, J.M. Synge and Martin McDonagh. From these examples, references to the origin of the plays and the brand, which reflect a specific conceptualisation of Ireland in the Galician context, will be examined.

Elisa Serra Porteiro is a lecturer in the Department of Hispanic and Portuguese Studies at University College Cork, where she did her PhD on the cultural history of Irish theatre in Galiza. Her research focuses on the intersection between theatre translation and stage practice, and has resulted in the publication of scholarly articles on Yeats, O'Casey, Synge and McDonagh and the volume Performing Irishness: Irish drama on the Galician Stage (Peter Lang, 2021).
