Description

Despite the welcome addition in recent years of numerous studies on the history of the theatre in Galicia, many aspects of the subject remain overlooked and under-researched.

Given the inextricable ties between the theatre in Galicia and the nationalist organisations that used drama as a way to achieve a wider audience for their ideas, the development of the dramatic arts in Galicia can only be understood in terms of the political context of the time. Laura Tato’s insightful new analysis and methodology does just that, using new evidence from previously unpublished texts and manuscripts.

The history of the theatre in Galicia is one of joint strategies, heated debate and tense silences between nationalists and non-nationalists alike. Rooted in the culture, language and lives of the ordinary people of the country, Galician drama existed in a constant state of tension with the stage-Galician stereotype. For the men and women of the theatre in Galicia, the attempt to normalise Galician culture and language through the dramatic arts was a vocation rife with social, political, ideological and even moral challenges.

Teatro e nacionalismo: Ferrol, 1915-1936 was awarded the Ricardo Carvalho Calero Language and Literary Research Prize in 1993.
