New book by Xosé Manuel Sánchez Rei
October 2019

Professor Xosé Manuel Sánchez Rei, a member of ILLA, has just published Traditional Galician Cancioneiro Compiled by Cipriano Torre Enciso, in collaboration with Catalina T. Castillón (Lamar University, USA).

The work, published by The Edwin Mellen Press, includes the almost 7,000 songs collected by C. Torre Enciso in the second half of the twentieth century (vol. 2), preceded by a literary-cultural setting by Catalina T. Castillón (vol. 1, pp. 1-40) and a linguistic study done by Xosé Manuel Sánchez Rei (vol. 1, pp. 40-341).

One of the most notable features of this collection of traditional texts is the fact that the collector included texts of Portuguese origin, which were adapted by him to be translated into Galician. It is also worth noting the circumstance of incorporating songs dated in different historical periods (18th, 19th, and 20th centuries). In short, the number of poems and their diverse origin undoubtedly make this songbook one of the most important of all published to date.
